CD REVIEWS

LOVE, LIFE & HOPE by Boston
(Frontier Records)

Extremely fresh, purely awesome, and retaining the classic sound all at once is Boston's 6th album called 'Love, Life & Hope'. Boston's trademark excellent guitar work, loud drums, cool synthesizer and organ play, and, of course, strong lead and harmony vocals are all present. Nothing's changed. All of these earlier aspects of Boston's success are evident on this album as well. Tom Scholz and his band have once again combined all of these factors into this album, and the result is a combination of great rock and roll songs. Vocalists on the album include the late Brad Delp (R.I.P.), Kimberley Dahme, David Victor formerly of Velocity, Tommy DeCarlo and Tom Scholz himself. Songs such as "Heaven on Earth", "Didn't Mean to Fall In Love", and the title track, ."Life, Love & Hope" showcase the great guitar, synthesizer, and drum work which made Boston famous. All eleven tracks are solid. All were recorded to analogue tape on the same machines and equipment used for band's hits for the past 35 years.' Boston will never be able to top their classic debut and near-perfect follow-up 'Don't Look Back'. But this is a damn good album. The guitar solos really stand out and the playing is fierce. It rocks a lot harder than 'Corporate America'. I was worried about the loss of Brad Delp on vocals, but Kimberley Dahme, David Victor, Tommy DeCarlo and even Tom do an outstanding job. All in all, 'Life, Love & Hope' is a must for any Boston fan and highly recommended for anyone who has a good taste in rock music. Welcome back Tom! - Highly Recommended

WESTERN SAND, Ep by Western Sand
(Independent Release)

UK rockers, Western Sand are on a mission. They intend on putting Rock n' Roll and the south of England back on the map! Judging by what the band has served up on their self titled debut EP I'd say they are well on their way in making that happen. Western Sand re-defines southern rock for a modern audience. By any standard, this band is unconventional they take the larger than life essence of classic rock and modernize it with a driving attack that is equal parts classic and modern hard rock. There are very few new bands out right now that sound this powerful or versatile. They may have that hard and heavy vibe, but make no mistake Western Sand is southern rock to the core. The band is made up of, Tyler Hains on electric guitar & lead vocals, Jimmy Bradshaw on electric guitar, Findlay Hotchkiss on bass & vocals and Nathan J. Kay on drums/percussion & vocals. While there are echoes of the past in their music that recalls Led Zeppelin and they have an honesty often associated with bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Black Crowes it merely acts as a foundation for their music. From the opening swagger of "A Place I Call Home", to the down right dirty groove of, "Take It Away", it's obvious these lads known how to throw down when it comes to kicking out the jams! The last two tracks, "Broken Bones", "Welcome To The Badlands" finish off the short but rocking experience. Bottom line, Western Sand is a four-piece, southern hard rock revival band loaded with guitars that rage and a shuddering rhythmic attack that will rock you for days. Western Sand comes highly recommended to any classic rock or southern rock music fan. A refreshing new band that has a great future ahead of them. I'm pretty sure you'll be hearing from these lads for a very long time to come! - Highly Recommended

MORE CATASTROPHE, Ep by Outloud
(Bad Reputation Records)

When the Greek-American melodic hard rock band Outloud broke out in 2009, Chandler Mogel, guitarist/keyboardist Bob Katsionis, guitarist Tony Kash and drummer Mark Cross joined by bassist Sverd Soth, had one objective in mind and that was to make the music world take notice. They did that with the release of their self titled debut. The album took the rock music by storm and was considered by many as one the best releases in 2009. In 2011 the band released their sophomore album, 'Love Catastrophe', with the same results as their acclaimed debut. Which brings us to 'More Catastrophe', which features left over tracks and a few other odds and ends from the 'Love Catastrophe' sessions. "Saints On Fire", kicks things off. A melodic rock gem that is straight forward and very catchy. The next two tracks, "Cross The Line" and "Mr. Long Gone", both also from the 'Love Catastrophe' sessions are upbeat movers that are rock solid. The Christmas theme gem, "The Last Days Of Christmas", a heartfelt ballad that will pull at your heart strings. The Flamenco version of "Falling Rain" is up next. A smooth mover that sounds amazing. From the band's debut, an amazing piano version of, "We Run". I mentioned odds and ends. The band serve up, "El Foco", sung in Spanish, which sounds great. The last two tracks, "W.F.Y.L" (Waiting for Your Love) an acoustic version of the song from the 'Love Catastrophe' sessions and "Lovesigh 2012" finish off the album...but hold on! There's even 'More Catastrophe'. There is a HD video of, "Waiting For Your Love". If you are a fan of Outloud, this Ep is a must. If your a fan of good melodic rock music , I would recommend you check out the band's first two albums and get caught up. These guys will have you rocking and rolling from the first note to the last note. Great stuff. - Highly Recommended

ROAD NOT TAKEN by Iron Bridge Band
( Messej Media)

The debut release, 'Road Not Taken' by Iron Bridge Band is pure melodic rock gold! The key element to the success of Iron Bridge Band is creating a modern rock sounding opus while pushing the genre into the future, with powerhouse rhythms and top notch production making it a classic and contemporary release. Every song has that vintage classic rock vibe, and every aspect from the songwriting to the musicianship to the vocals to the production is absolutely top notch. Iron Bridge Band is Chandler Mogel on vocals, Steve Walsh on guitars, Lanie Suky on bass and Scott Suky on drums. 'Road Not Taken' is a record that should be getting heavy rotation on American FM rock radio stations. In my opinion, it's as good if not better than just about anything on the Billboard Top 100 Rock Albums right now. Vocalist Chandler Mogel does a simply flawless job of delivering everything a rock record needs: power, melody, and soaring energy. Whether it is the outstanding rhythm section on amazing songs like "Thunder In A Sacred Place", "Best Wine" , "Petticoat Road" or the heartfelt "Wildflower" to the rocking "Smokin' Gun". One thing is for sure, listening to this album will be a memorable one. The production is incredibly clear, it's obvious that the band put their hearts and souls into every song.
With 'Road Not Taken', the Iron Bridge Band has made it perfectly clear , they are here to stay for the long run. If you like melodic rock you NEED this album in your collection. There have been some really good melodic rock releases so far this year but with 'Road Not Taken', Iron Bridge Band makes a strong case for being on the top of the "Best of 2013" list. This is a must-have melodic rock album any way you look at it. If you like melodic rock - old, new, European, American, whatever, you owe to yourself to check out 'Road Not Taken' by Iron Bridge Band. - Highly Recommended

FORGIVE & REGRET by Beautiful Strangers
(Vandalize Records)

Beautiful Strangers are a five piece rock band from The UK. They are, Stuart Dade Davies on vocals, Michael James and Richie Lewis on guitars, Jon Roach on bass and David Davies on drums. If you like rock that has a meaning other than just trying to make money then you'll enjoy the band's debut release, 'Forgive & Regret'. It is always great to hear a new coming on the scene band playing their own songs and not stuff written by an outside song writer. The band open their album with the stimulating rocker, "Junkie" where the stage is set for the rest of the album in the form a great mix of straight ahead in your face badass attitude rockers like, "Kick Me When I'm Down", "Shame, Shame, Shame" and groove laden swagger of, "Damaged Goods". As well as delivering melodic gems as in, "I Can't Lie" and "Another Thing". Very impressive first outing. The Beautiful Strangers promise to be one of the hottest new rock bands to arrive on today's rock music scene. Delivering a rock sound full of power and groove with lots of hooks and a great doses of melody that sounds refreshingly original yet classic. So, if you like no-frills hard rock, check out Beautiful Strangers and get your hands on their debut, 'Forgive & Regret' and crank it up for all it's worth. I guarantee you won't be disappointed. Definitely looking forward to hearing what these lads come up with next! Cheers Gents for a job well done! - Highly Recommended

NINE LIVES by Von Hertzen Brothers
(Universal Music)

The Von Hertzen Brothers are back with their latest release, 'Nine Lives', the band's fifth. For those new to the Von Hertzen Brothers, the band is made up of , Mikko Von Hertzen - vocals, guitar , Kie Von Hertzen - guitar and vocals, Jonne von Hertzen - bass and vocals, Mikko Kaakkuriniemi - drums and Juha Kuoppala on keyboards. They have huge fan base overseas and are hoping to make a buzz here in America with their latest outing. 'Nine Lives' is completely satisfying from beginning to end. It is quite diverse and incredibly successful in all the areas which it explores. Rock anthems like, "Insomniac" "Coming Home" will make you just want to get up and rock out along with the Brothers Von Hertzen. While more melodic numbers like, "Flowers and Rust" and "One May Never Know" are sure to move you. Then there is, "The World Without" and "Prospect For Escape" that shows a progressive side to the brother's musical repertoire. The diversity in the way the brothers deliver their musical vision is what attracted me to them in the first place. Musically it is impossible to pigeon hole this band of brothers. They are a rock band, but they also have that progressive rock vibe about them as well, but that's not really a genre that is capable of being defined. Think of a swirling stew of influences blended together to concoct something palatable, aromatic, and biting. Everything combined creates something completely different. If I were to draw a comparison I would say they sound like Porcupine Tree with hints of Brian Wilson and Queen harmonies. I know, it sounds odd but somehow it makes perfect sense. Although their music embraces so many unique rhythms and abstract scales, there is something special about the Von Hertzen Brothers that makes them approachable and intriguing. If your up for something adventurous that challenges your expectations, give the Von Hertzen Brothers a listen. And if you know any music fans who are sick of commercial music, point them in the Von Hertzen Brother's direction. Chances are, they won't be disappointed. And neither will you. - Highly Recommended

DIG by Heaven &,Earth
(Quatro Valley Records)

A legit contender for "Rock Album Of The Year" has emerged in the form of ,'Dig' by Heaven & Earth. Powered by Stuart Smith on guitars, Joe Retta on vocals, Chuck Wright on bass, Richie Onori on drums and Arlan Schierbaum on keyboards. H&E have their sights on resurrecting the sanctity of classic rock music and rocking the masses in the process. This is the band's third effort and in my opinion the best the band has ever sounded. Produced by Dave Jenkins who’s turned the knobs for everyone from Metallica to Tower of Power. 'Dig' is pure classic rock. It's fresh and vigorous. The sonic wall of classic rock sounds full of energy and is wrapped around amazing songs and tasteful production. From the moment you press play H&E go in for the kill with the majestic mover,"Victorious', a powerful rocker that draws you in and prepares you for the rocking experience that awaits. "No Money, No Love" is up next and pulls no punches! A straight ahead mover in the vein of Deep Purple meets Rainbow. The immensity of the music in crafting the songs gives this album a sense of the sum being greater than all of its parts. Heaven & Earth have come together and created a album that without a doubt is destined to become a true rock classic . Twelve tracks in total not a weak track among them. Stuart Smith provides a lot of energy and passion with his signature guitar technique. His guitar playing sounds as fresh and energetic as ever. Joe Retta' s vocals are simply superb while the rhythm section of Chuck Wright and Richie Onori give the band it's rock solid foundation. Let's not forget, Arlan Schierbaum on keyboards, a true wizard whose playing reminded of a mix between Tony Carey and Keith Emerson. What Heaven & Earth have done with 'Dig' is re-awaken the true spirit of the old masters. Bands like Rainbow, Whitesnake and Deep Purple made history with their classic albums. In the 21st Century there needs to be a new messenger to carry the torch and amaze a new generation of rock music fans. Messengers like Heaven & Earth, who have it all: experience, personality, and amazing musical skills undoubtedly on a world-class level. 'Dig' should be mandatory to be on the shelf of anyone that likes rock music. Yes it's that good. - Highly Recommended

CD REVIEWS

THE WORLD IS TOO SMALL by Dead Cult Dairies
( Warner Music Finland)

How would I describe, 'The World Is Too Small' the debut release by Finnish Pop Rockers, Dead Cult Diaries?  A perfect hybrid of Finnish female pop with HEAVY, metallic, crunchy powerpop made for the arena rock stage. Usually, one dominates the other, or it sounds forced or lopsided. Here, somehow, Dead Cult Dairies makes this combination work like magic, the most natural thing in the world.  Dead Cult Dairies are, Emmy on vocals, Arttu on guitar, J-V on guitar, Ränttilä on bass and Juuso on drums. Emmy is a woman of many dimensions, and the rest of the band has the skill and chops to deliver these songs home with attitude, power and  panache to spare. Twin guitarists Arttu and J-V do great work here, with real originality, chops, and feeling. The rhythm section of bass player
Ränttilä and drummer Juuso are tight. 'The World Is Too Small' finds the band delivering a great variety of songs.  The ultimate catchy "Saints & Sinners" crawls on you so easily, it's like the flu. The sound is almost Garbage meets Birthday Massacre. The lyrics are simple, meaningful and catchy. The also better "One In a Million" has more punch and attitude and screams girl power. The album can be infectious when also listening to "Boys And Toys" and "Crushed" another two songs that deliver great musical pow! A good Finnish remedy to new age pop rock for 2013 and beyond. As much as you have heard musical styles interwoven before, there is something about the way Dead Cult Dairies play that will make you feel like you are listening to completely new music. - Highly Recommended

THE BLACK MOODS by The Black Moods
(Black Moods Masterpieces)

The Black Moods' self-titled, loud, sexy, and soulful debut album is a memorable and melodic introduction to the Arizona-based rock trio. The album successfully captures the guts of their deep rock roots. From Led Zeppelin to Tom Petty. The Black Moods are, Joshua Kennedy on vocals and guitars, Ryan Prier on bass and Danny "Chico" Diaz on drums. A young group with promise, I tell you if these guys can keep it together they will go very far. These guys know what rock and roll is supposed to sound like! From the pounding rock beat of "Can't Sleep At Night" to the groove laden movers like, "Serve You Right" and the tribal vibe of "Give It To Me", that will get you grooving in no time flat. Then there is, " Hey You", this mover has hit written all over it. Ten rock solid tracks total, not a filler among them. As a band the chemistry between Joshua Kennedy , Ryan Prier and Chico Diaz are tight as a glove. The Black Moods bring a much needed soul filled energy to the rock music scene that's been missing for some time. We need more bands like The Black Moods, especially in this pop filled wasteland. Hail Hail Rock n Roll! - Highly Recommended

CANNIBAL NATION by Mob Rules
(AFM RECORDS)

Power Metal rockers Mob Rules return with their latest offering, 'Cannibal Nation' , the band's 7th release and just like their previous outings the band has put together a rock solid album. Nothing overly bombastic about it, just refined power metal played very well. Delivering a great blend of melodic metal, combining Iron Maiden-like melodies with Queensryche and Gamma Ray flair. The song writing is well thought out lyrically and the songs have an ebb and flow to them that just seems like second nature for them. Take the first two songs that open the album, "Close My Eyes" and "Lost" they just move along at groove laden pace and make their statement without going over the top and hitting you like a freight train. "The Telebox Fool" is the first aggressive track that blazes along, superb guitar playing and shredding lead guitar work. The same can be said about, "The Sirens". The album closing Sunrise" are extremely addictive songs. In fact, the whole album is addictive. A mixture that will amaze fans from power metal to Classic Rock. Overall, 'Cannibal Nation' is consistent and the flow is superb. There is enough charm and chivalry to this recording to satisfy not just power metal fans, but fans of any genre of music. Great riffs, great melodies, catchy choruses and great hooks. It has it all. - Highly Recommended

RESURRECT ME by Pamela Moore
(Ratpak Records)

Pamela Moore best known for her role as Sister Mary on the multi-platinum selling masterpiece, ‘Operation Mindcrime’ by Queensryche unleashes her latest album, ‘Resurrect Me’.  I have to say, I was quite surprised, no more like blown away actually, once I pressed play. This album just consumed me from the first listen. Showcasing Pamela’s three and a half octave range and melodic vocal arrangements combined with the awesome metal riffs. ‘Resurrect Me’ starts off with the heavy mid-tempo rhythm of “Acquiescent”, talk about having your undivided attention. “Melt Into You” and “Paranoia” are the next two tracks both exhibiting just how powerful Pamela’ s vocal prowess really are. The title track is simply epic. The song builds in intensity until midway through the song when the mind blowing guitars turn it up and Pamela’ s vocals go in for the kill. She has definitely taken notes in her time being around the Queensryche guys and carried it forward with some nice modern touches. Guest appearances from Ralf Scheepers of Primal Fear and guitar wizard Jeff Loomis of Sanctuary and Nevermore fame just add to the sound. The albums closes out with, “Wide Awake (Phoenix Rising)”. I had high hopes for this album. Usually when I set such high standards , I get disappointed. Not this time. Pamela Moore with, ‘Resurrect Me’ has delivered an amazingly powerful recording. It connects with you at an emotional level, leaving you hungry to experience it again. Deep, complicated lyrics blended with driving rock are perfectly balanced giving a unique sound that simply must be heard.- Highly Recommended

THE KEY by Dave Rude Band
(Rat Pak Records)

Tesla guitarist, Dave Rude returns with the follow-up to his self titled debut outing with, ‘The Key’. Showcasing his amazing guitar skills as well as rock solid vocals. Along with bassist Marco Guzman, drummer Josh Schmidt. ‘The Key’ serves up a straight-forward dose of hard-rockin’ songs that will have you rocking out in no time flat! The album itself is an adrenaline rush of pure rock and roll and it’s clear from the get go that Dave Rude and his band have one intention and that’s to thoroughly rock your socks off! ‘ The Key’, is an album loaded with great riffs such as the opening title track “The Key” with its supercharged driven riff that has Dave Rude using his full vocal range to drive the song on. Then there is, “Yours To Hold” a firecracker of a song that simply balls to wall! “On My Own Again”, features Dave’s Tesla bandmate, Troy Luckketta on drums. Speaking of drums. There’s some great drumming and bass playing from Josh Scmidt and Marco Guzmanon on the songs “Iron Grip” and the killer take on the Pete Gabriel classic, “Sledgehammer”. The full throttle rocker, “Charlie Mansion” finishes off the album.  From start to finish this album has real teeth. A great collection of well written and performed songs here but it’s the overall sound that impressed me. Energizing and driving, the Dave Rude Band’s, ‘The Key’ is essential to any fan of rock music. - Highly Recommended

THE FIRST RECORD by Tracii Guns' League Of Gentlemen
(Shrapnel Records)

Whether it's with L..A. Guns, his solo records or any of the number one off bands that Tracii Guns has been involved with. The end result is always the same, it's DAMN GOOD. His latest endeavor, Tracii Gun' s League Of Gentlemen is no different.  Tracii Guns has assembled a group of rock solid musicians that have great chemistry. The band's debut, 'The First Record' is proof of that. Leaning towards a more late 60's-ish British American blues rock sound. Tracii Guns and his League Of Gentlemen are here to make sure the 60's generation is well represented in the 21st Century. The "League" is made up of, Scott Foster Harris brings a very soulful southern flavor while mixing Blues, Country and Classic Rock elements into his vocal styling. Craig '"Patches" McCloskey comes from Philly plays bass and Doni Gray from Los Angeles on drums. John Bird also from Los Angeles CA is a the musician that every band wishes they had. A multi-instrument playing musician who knows the ins and outs of music. Now, let's talk about the album. "Everything Everything" kicks things off on rocking fashion followed by "The Witch" a number that could have easily been taken off any album by Eric Burden and The Animals. Then theres  "Painted Lady," a charmer of a number that will tug at your heart strings. While "Long Way To Heaven" has that Delta Blues meets Yardbirds vibe to it.  While "Saginsaw Blues" features some incredible guitar work by Tracii Guns. The band offer up two covers, "One" a great rendition of The Three Dog Night classic. The other is,  "Without You", written by the late Pete Ham of Badfinger. Overall, Tracii Guns League Of Gentlemen's 'The First Record' is a very strong, totally captivating slab of old school rock n' roll that is unlikely to disappoint too many fans of the classic rock sound. If you still play your Led Zeppelin, Cream, The Animals and The Who albums on a regular basis, Tracii Guns' League Of Gentlemen is about to become your new favorite band. - Highly Recommended

HAIL TO THE RIVER GODS by Triggerman
(Triggerlad Records)

The Irish juggernaut known as Triggerman have unleashed their third album in the form of, 'Hail To The River Gods'. The music on this album is an unabated testimonial to the band's earthshaking ability to rock and give a whole new meaning to the word, "Riff". Triggerman is a ferocious beast made up of, Bap (vocals, guitar), Niall (guitar), Rory (drums), Dixie (Bass). Aggressive vocals courtesy of Bap are set with the churning waves of his and Niall's hulking riffs, with harmonic subtlety and some stunningly melodic parts without pretense. The rhythm section of Dixie and Rory are just down right scary good. All coming together for one hell of a riff orgy! As is evident once you hit play and the ballsy shuffle of the sledgehammer, "Rage Of The Goddess" blasts out your speakers and will clear any sinus problems you have, no joke! The assault continues with, "Rise Of The Woodsmen", the title track, and "Thon Strange Brew" . 'Hail To The River Gods" is an incredible excursion into a world of dense riffage, odd-time signatures and time changes, unconventional song structures and rich rhythmic textures. If you enjoy high quality hard rock music that hits you like a sledgehammer served up by high level quality  musicianship and that just flat out rocks, Triggerman is the band for you. Overall, powerhouse of an album by a powerhouse band destined for bigger things to come! I look forward to hearing what the lads come up with next. - Highly Recommended

SHOOT THE CROW by Hangfire
(Hangfire Music)

'Shoot The Crow' the debut release from Southern Welsh rockers Hangfire is pure hard rock mixed with massive slabs of blues groove with monstrous power and melody. Hangfire is made up of, Max Rhead on vocals, Lizzy Evans on guitar, Bob Goo on bass and Matt Blakout on drums. The band's blusey sound and soulful vibe is a refreshing alternative for those who may be tired of the recent trend of "metal-core" and are looking for some good 'ol hard rock with a ballsy edge. The riffs are kept simple but there are some blazing solos to be found here courtesy of Lizzy Evans strong guitar work. The blues rock influenced vocals of Max Rhead and the tight rhythm section of Goo and Blakout keep the groove going at a steady pace and will keep you coming back for more. Standout tracks include "For Crying Out Loud", the groove laden moving title track,  "Faith In Me", and "Drop The Bomb" among others, but there's not a weak track to be found here. All in all, if you're a fan of hard rock/metal with a southern/blusey vibe, then you should definitely give Hangfire a shot. - Highly Recommended

THE WALK OF SHAME by Tricorn
(Bad Shrink Records)

Portsmouth, England's Tricorn release their juggernaut of a debut in the form of, 'The Walk Of Shame'. Formed by guitarist/vocalist Billy Dyne and drummer Simon Lopez. Rounding out the band are, Constantine Droutsas on guitar and Alex Kidd on bass. What Tricorn seem to be shooting for is a largely "stoner rock" kind of bass-driven and somewhat melodic underpinning largely riff-driven rock. There are enough "air guitar" moments on this album to satisfy any cravings you might have, and the riffs are also catchy enough to maintain ones interest. There's no pretense here; these lads find the groove and rock it out for all it's worth, while occasionally locking on to a killer melodic hook. It's two guitars, bass & drums in a race to the finish. With song titles like "Lady", "Astral Dreams", "Dogs Unleashed" and "Black Devil's Smoke" you know what you're in for. The sound is a balance of aggressive energy and well-placed balls to wall no nonsense hard rock music. You can headbang to it, shake your nether regions, take an emotional roller coaster ride with the sonic ebb and flow, but you can't stay still. Not possible. A declaration that speaks for much of this album's attitude. Obviously the whole retro/stoner scene is getting pretty crowded these days, and not all of these new albums are worth picking up. Tricorn is worth a shot. No frills here, just four guys having one hell of a time playing whiskey fueled licks and insisting on starting a party.  If you're looking for a great new retro metal stoner rock band, look no further. If you love the late ''70s metal and hard psychedelic rock and you want to relive the good ol' days, look no further. If you want an authentic rock sound and riffs that sound fresh and not totally re-hashed, look no further than, 'The Walk Of Shame'. Tricorn rock the way rock music should sound. Keep them coming like this lads and you can't go wrong! - Highly Recommended

HAIL THE MONSTERS by For The Imperium
(Republic of Music)

Finnish rock outfit known as For The Imperium are back with their sophomore album, 'Hail The Monsters'. To describe this album in the simplest terms possible, a progressive technical-metal album. It's a very eclectic mix of influences. They can sometimes switch from one to another at the drop of a hat, and some of the songs are filled with so many different parts in different styles that it could almost be viewed as overwhelming. For The Imperium are Hakim Hietikko on vocals, Villie Suorsa on guitar, Jyri Helko on bass and Tuomas Rauhala on drums. The album features ten tracks. Every song is a well thought out and surprising journey that flutters between styles, tempos, time-sigs and vocal styles in a way that somehow flows smoothly. Its difficult to choose highlights because every track is packed with countless memorable riffs, and inventive lyrics. If I had to choose favorites however, they would probably be "Take A Breath, Now You're Going To War", "Northern Rampage (Muscles and Gasoline)", "Sexual Advisory", "Heaven Shall Fall/Hell Will Return" and Sudden Death". Rather than sounding muddled, confused, or cheesy, they somehow manage to pull off this mixture with an absolute flair and perfection. 'Hail The Monsters' is a brilliant spark of creativity. Initially the sheer scale of the diversity and virtuosity may feel pretentious, but upon numerous repeat listens I've definitely come to believe that there isn't anything cynical at work here. It really rewards repeat listening and every spin will uncover a new little gem you never noticed before. If you have any interest in heavy music get this album. if you don't, you may find yourself having to jump aboard the bandwagon instead of starting it. - Highly Recommended

VIRTUE & VICE by Robot Lords Of Tokyo
(Independent Release)

Robot Lords Of Tokyo return with their latest behemoth in the form of, 'Virtue & Vice'. Fair warning this album is not for the faint of heart. The "RIFF" symphony that awaits you will knock your senses off the chart. Masochist of the hard and heavy will climax like Old Faithful! I kid you not. Robot Lords Of Tokyo are, Rick Ritzler on drums and Paul Jones on lead vocals. This duo recruited a "Special Forces" of guitar mercenaries to help bring this beast to life. Chris Poland (Megadeth) on "Hell Will Have To Wait", Tracy G. (Dio) on two tracks, "Great Escape" and "Broken". Then you have Wayne Findlay (Slavior) on "Voice Inside". Ten tracks in all. All like Titan missiles that explode on impact! Robot Lords Of Tokyo have that heavy down-tuned guitar sound, along with excellent sound production quality. The album moves along at a nice pace. Nothing too slow, nor too fast. I get a good sense of energy from this band, in which a lot of newer bands do NOT give me. Robot Lords Of Tokyo have a great vocalist. Paul Jones can really sing. He has a good rasp to his voice, but not overdone. He also sports a nice set of lungs. I hate categorizing bands, but this band can fall under grunge with a hint of doom. Sort of an up-beat doom album with powerful, no-nonsense vocals. The band is REALLY tight, and is a band for the more serious music fan, who doesn't need a gimmick to lure them in. Robot Lords Of Tokyo is NOT gimmicky, nor do they need to be. They are a straight forward, in your face, hard rockin' band. Fans of Kyuss, Earthride, Goatsnake should enjoy this.  These boys only play three ways, LOUD, PROUD and HEAVY! Don't say I didn't warn you. Great band, Love 'em. - Highly Recommended

(Koch International)

The music contained on 'Eliminate Ya! Live!' by Big Sugar is a 2-Disc CD/DVD set that includes a Live DVD filmed during their sold out show at the Burton Cummings Theatre in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I've been a longtime fan of Big Sugar and the musical experience that awaits you with this Live set will move you in way unimaginable. The ability of Gordie Johnson and the band to lay out their very soul on these songs and the way that they continue to amaze and excite on every song is mind blowing. The DVD has a total of 26 smoking tracks that include, "Diggin' A Hole", "Nicotina", "Better Get Used To It (I Want You/Shes So Heavy)", "Ride Like Hell", "Turn The Lights On/Acted Badly" and "Spirit of Radio/ I Want You Now". CD features songs from the live DVD and the new bonus track "Eliminate Ya!" Whether it is visually or by hearing Big Sugar, it's all good any way you slice it. The end result is the same, you are going to LOVE IT! If what you want is astonishing musicians improvising and creating jams that make you smile and wonder at the talent that can come from a group of talented individuals, then this set is a must have. The soulfulness and the love of each musician here for the music is what makes this unique. The way the players are able to blend their own sound into the songs this is what makes, 'Eliminate Ya! Live!' very special. When you listen to a recording live or studio and as soon as you are done, you sit there in the quiet and you can`t believe what you heard, and so you listen again, and the feeling is still the same, then you know you`ve heard greatness.
'Eliminate Ya! Live' is an amazing collection of songs from a great concert, as I feel are the majority of Big Sugar shows are. Thank you, Gordie Johnson and the band for an amazing and unforgettable musical experience! - Highly Recommended

A powerful, ass-kickin' hard guitar rock album with an authentic early 70's influenced, bluesy, crunchy, psychedelic rock vibe. Trippy, burning guitar leads, a pounding, chugging rhythm section and whiskey soaked vocals combine for a killer rock `n' roll experience. The Heavy Eyes are, Tripp Shumake on vocals & guitar, Wally Anderson on bass and Eric Garcia on drums. This power rock trio wear their influences on their sleeves. from Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Black Sabbath, Leaf Hound, Lord Fowl, Free, Grand Funk Railroad, Graveyard, James Gang and U.F.O. These boys are tight and bring a refreshing retro rock sound that delivers one serious kick in the A-S-S! The album opens with, "Levantado" and from there on out its an all out assault of in your face straight up rock! "One Hand On The Buffalo", "Maggie" and "These Men Are Wolves". The songs have a darkness to them that is somewhat psychedelic or occult-ish, but always interesting. Too many metal/hard rock bands approach songwriting as a matter of cutting-and-pasting riffs together in Pro Tools. The Heavy Eyes' music feels organic, as if the songs were created for one epic jam sessions. All I can say is, more of this, please! I'm on my second listen as I write this, and I know that it's going to be listened to at least once or twice a day for the next couple of weeks. To me, that's the sign of a great album and 'Maera' by The Heavy Eyes is a damn great album. - Highly Recommended

FEATURED CD REVIEW:
DARK EMERALD HIGHWAY
by The Pat McManus Band
(Rock Music House)

Track Listing:
1. S Before X 2.Transformations 3.Loving Kind 4.Lets Turn It Up 5.Lazy Days 6.Cold Town 7.Fallen Angel 8.Shame On You 9.Belfast Boy 10.The Bolt

If ' Walking Through Shadows' was all about raw energy, then 'Dark Emerald Highway' the latest release from Pat "The Professor" McManus is all about passion and songwriting that many other artists deeply envy. Oh and there is still plenty of power on display, but utilized with a skill and control that almost beggars belief. ‘Dark Emerald Highway’ is Pat McManus' most personal and introspective album to date. The players on the album features Pat on guitar, violin and vocals; Marty McDermott on bass and Paul Faloon and drums. The album opens with the whiskey soaked mover, "S Before X", has a bit of a ZZ Top vibe that will have your undivided attention hook, line and sinker. The foot stomping, 'Transformations' lures you in with it soulful infused bass line. "Loving Kind", a soulful ballad that contains some of the most captivating guitar playing to ever be found in a modern blues song complete with voice box effects. It's one of those songs that reaches out and grabs your appreciation when you hear it. The Mama's Boys inspired, "Let's Turn It Up", a mid tempo mover that begs you to put your speakers to the test. While the rocking, "Lazy Days" has that Thin Lizzy vibe to it. Pat then pays homage to Gary Moore, on "Belfast Boy", featuring Brendan McCreanor on Ulleann Pipes. Pat closes the album with, "The Bolt" a traditional folk roots mover highlighted with Pat showing his love and respect for his heritage with a smoking guitar workout. 'Dark Emerald Highway' is a complete album from top to bottom. It is a record that needs to played in its entirety and enjoyed as such. Pat McManus' guitar work is fantastic as always and the band sounds as if they are having the time of their lives. Pat's tone is amazing and wears his heritage with pride more so he puts them in overdrive and takes them to new heights. The standard of playing on this album ranks along side his very best work. 'Dark Emerald Highway' helps bolster Pat's already formidable reputation as one of the finest exponents of the electric guitar around today. If you like Pat McManus' style, you’ll love 'Dark Emerald Highway'. - Highly Recommended

BEHIND THE VEIL & FLYING HIGH
The Burning Crows
Interview by Tony & Bill @ The Dedicated Rocker Society

"If people want something, we’ll give it to them. Without the fans it’s just a rehearsal, it’s cliché but it’s true and if you’re not doing it for them then how can you expect to ever get anywhere?" - Whippz, The Burning Crows

UK , bravado rockers, The Burning Crows showcase an infectious mix of good time rock n’ roll, with an attitude, style & swagger that lands Britrock firmly back in the contemporary mainstream and that has earned them the reputation of being one of the very best live bands on the scene today.

Following the amazing public and media reaction to the release of their aptly named “Never Had It So Good” EP, the subsequent headline tour of the UK & Ireland, a slot at Hard Rock Hell and featuring as special guests to The Quireboys throughout their winter tour, it’s safe to say that bravado rock n rollers, The Burning Crows, couldn’t have asked for a better 2012. There truly is no rest for the wicked however, as after reaching 100% of their PledgeMusic target, the band set their sights on releasing their Debut Album, “Behind The Veil” in Spring 2013.

So, if high energy, rock n’ roll played hard and played with gusto is your thing, come join the “future of British Rock”s carnival of frivolity and indulge in the decadent feast for the senses that is “Behind The Veil”. The Rocker and I asked The Burning Crows frontman, Whippz to give us the lowdown behind the band. Here’s what he shared with us…

How long have The Burning Crows been together? Cool name, who came up with the name?

WHIPPZ: The origins of the name are steeped in mystery as none of us can actually recall exactly how it came about but it’s come into its own and it just seems to fit. Plus we all look a bit hagged and smell faintly of rotting flesh after a night down the boozer so it’s perfect. I do remember however that it all started about 3 years ago with a chance meeting between Lance & I over a few bottles of wine one sunny afternoon… We were both band less at that point, Will had already said to me about starting a new project and we found Chris down an alley somewhere, so one thing just led to another and before we knew it, we were out on the road playing shows all over the Motherland! It all really started happening for us over the past year or so though since our first EP (Never Had It So Good) came out, we headlined our own tour around the UK & Ireland, toured as special guests to The Quireboys, reached 100% of our PledgeMusic target and recorded our debut album “Behind The Veil”(released June 17th) at the world famous Rockfield Studios in Wales with legendary producer Nick Brine, so it’s been a busy year!

Who are your musical influences?

W: Too many to list, it goes from the usual Rock giants like AC/DC, GnR & KISS through to stuff like The Faces, The Stones & The Quireboys but there’s also influence from all kinds of stuff from metal through to country. The cool thing is we all bring our own style and influence to a new track, put our own spins on it and it just comes out sounding like us!

Your debut full release, ‘Behind The Veil’, break it down for us.

W: In total we were at Rockfield for about a month over the two sessions as our EP was kind of a prelude to the album and some of those 5 tracks actually feature on “Behind The Veil” too, so there’s actually 9 new tracks that we recorded this time around though and a couple of which we’ve never even played live before, so it’s going to exciting for us to see how people react t them all! As far as memorable moments go, there’s too many to mention as to just be recording in a place like that, where so many of the bands you grew up listening to recorded their most famous songs, is incredible and massively inspiring. It’s just one of those places where you feel like you belong. It’s …actually quite magical! We had a lot of laughs too though, mostly revolving around sneaking out for a well- earned Gin after an especially good take… Problem was it was never quick and never just gin haha!

What goals have you set for yourselves as a band in 2013?

W: World Domination! Tours, Radio, TV, Rambo 5 and lingerie catalogues haha! We had an incredible 2012 and a lot of that is largely down to the support of our fans, so we owe it them and ourselves to keep pushing this as far as we can. At the end of the day nobody is going to do it for you, so if you want something you’re going to have to go get it and we’re more than happy to do just that. 101% – 24/7 – 365. No excuses, no regrets! If people want something, we’ll give it to them. Without the fans it’s just a rehearsal, it’s cliché but it’s true and if you’re not doing it for them then how can you expect to ever get anywhere?

Do you have plans to tour America? Who would you like to tour with when you do come over? (notice we said when not if)

W: It’s funny you ask because I had an interesting phone call from our agent about that this morning but I’m sworn to secrecy for now but keep a weather eye on the horizon… It’s something we’ve always wanted to do though and as we’ve always said, if people want it, we’ll find a way to make it happen. Preferably with AC/DC!

Aside from recording and performing, do you find some to time to do other things? If so, what?

W: It’s been crazy lately what with everything that’s happening but we always manage to find some time for a bit of Rest and Relaxation… Usually down the boozer. Now I think about it we spend a lot of our free time down the boozer having adventures of a wine based nature haha!

Complete this sentence… You should check out The Burning Crows because…

W: They’re an audible rock n roll feast for the senses and will transport you to a frivolous carnival of good time rock n roll! That and if you don’t Will is going to hunt you down.

What separates The Burning Crows from the other rock bands that are on the scene at the present?

W: There’s a lot of great bands out there right now but a lot of it seems somewhat contrived and if we’re being honest, a little fake. I mean even some of the bigger bands we all know and love seem to have unfortunately almost become parodies of themselves still making a living off of all the heroin they did… 20 years ago!? We’ve always maintained that we’re just going to be us, if people like it – brilliant. If they don’t – jog on. We’re just us at the end of the day and yes, we drink, we fuck up, we piss people off but we have a great time doing it, we try to put on the kind of show and be the kind of band we’d want to see live and we’ll always only sing about things that are true to us. There’s no bullshit, it’s all real and although inevitably not everyone will like you for not being and fitting into a certain scene or sounding and looking a certain way, we’re proud of who we are now not who we WANT to be and I think that’s been missing for a while in music. Oh and also we haven’t met a band we can’t drink under the table (and yes that is a challenge to any takers – lets hook it up!)

Any parting comments?

W: Thanks to all of our fans in The US. We love you all and cheers for all the support! “Behind The Veil” is released June 17th through iTunes and MusicBuyMail.EU, so grab a copy, come say hi on Facebook and we’ll be over to see you all as soon as we can! Nothing but love people!

Let Their Music Do The Talking
The Broken Chords
by Tony & Bill @ The Dedicated Rocker Society

” We’re a three piece that play straight up classic rock songs.”

This is what the UK rockers, The Broken Chords will tell you if you ask them what their all about. At first glance though, you would not expect to hear rock music coming from these three men. Three strapping young lads that are clean cut and look like they came out of G.Q. magazine. After listening to their single, “Son Of A Gun”, it’s obvious these lads are out to R-O-C-K the world! Don’t let their looks deceive you. What’s the old saying? Never judge a book by looking at it’s cover. Make no mistake, The Broken Chords are 100% pure Rock ‘N’ Roll! These lads are the real deal and that’s no joke!

Hailing from Essex/Herts, The Broken Chords serve up a classic rock sound that reference Led Zep and Cream while sitting firmly in the 21st Century. The band is made up of Joe (Vocals/Guitar), Aid (Vocals/Bass) and Jamie (Drums). This power rock trio are about to put the rock music world on notice! The Rocker and I caught up with The Broken Chords to talk about their music, their goals and few other things. Here’s what they shared with us…

How did The Broken Chords come about? Cool name by the way, who came up with the name?

We’ve known each other since our early teens from playing in bands and gigging together on the same scene just outside London, England. When the chance came to work together, we all wanted to be in straight up rock & roll band so all jumped at the opportunity. We’ve spent time finding our sound. We’ve worked hard playing at all the key UK rock venues, especially in Camden, London, which is the British home of live rock. The name “broken chord” is a musical term and we like to let the music do the talking, so it’s perfect.

We’ve heard two songs already, “Son Of A Gun”, which is balls out rocker and “Pyro”, another great shot of rock and roll Viagra! How many songs can we expect to see on your full debut release?

We’re currently putting a 5 track debut EP together. We’re adding material to our website at www.the brokenchords.comall the time. We’re working closely with a great young UK rock producer Gez Walton, who has done some great things with some of the new wave of British rock bands. The EP is fantastically important to us because it is our calling card in America. It’s like “Listen! This is what we are about!” We will follow up with a second EP around September and debut album after that.

We have to admit, at first glance you guys don’t look like how you sound (we mean that in a good way). What was it like when you got up on stage for the time? We can only imagine that you blew them away once you plugged in.

Often people don’t expect us to make the sound we do, but we quite like that. We are normal young blokes from London who serve up maximum riffage – but we don’t have to look like a cliche. Rock for us is about embracing the best from the past, but it’s also a forward-looking genre. And yes, it’s great to blow people away – although we are never just hard and loud for the sake of it – there’s always a soul in our music that appeals as much to the ladies as to guys.

In your bio, you mention musical influences ranging from Led Zeppelin to the Foo Fighters. Who exposed to that musical influence?

You get musical influences from everywhere and its just a case of being open to it. Joe and Jamie in particular grew up around musicians both in their families and in the gigging world, so obviously that has a big effect on what your listening to. We’re all big into our stadium filling rock bands which explains the Foo’s and the Led Zep influence. We have enormous respect for the rock history of the USA and the way that the best British bands have re-interpreted the blues, for example, and served it back to America. In a sense, we are doing the same thing now. American radio and arena rock is our ultimate goal.

What do The Broken Chords bring to the table that other rock bands on the scene today don’t bring?

We’re a three piece that play straight up classic rock songs, but with modern production and attitude. We don’t know any other band in Europe who are doing anything quite the same thing – they are either much more metal-rock (like the German/Scandinavians) or too self consciously indie. It’s hard to master a sound like this just as a three piece. Also we’re very passionate & seriously love what we do. It’s the best job there is getting on stage and we love every bloody second of it.

As a band, what goals have you set for yourselves in 2013?

Getting out our debut EP is massively important, and that’s going to happen in the next month. We are also looking at options to base ourselves in the USA and collaborate with American partners to start work. We totally understand how much work it will take to be taken seriously in the USA, how big the market is, and how much top quality competition there is. We are dedicated to non-stop touring and promotion and we want to win American hearts and minds in the way many of the British bands of the 1970s did.

Are there plans coming to America to do any shows?

This is absolutely priority number one after the debut EP release. We are speaking to potential label and touring partners in the USA now and we just want to get going!

If you were not playing in a rock and roll band, what would you be doing?

If we’re not playing, we’re thinking about playing. You have to be all-in to do this – and even though we are 21 we have been at this for a very long time now. We don’t have a plan B.

For the person reading about The Broken Chords for the first time. What would say to get them interested in your band?

Get onto www.thebrokenchords.comand check us out – and do everything you can to see us live. At the end of the day rock ‘n’ roll is all about the magic of a shared live experience – and we want to give that to as many fans as possible.

Any parting comments?

Sure – looking forward to seeing you all in LA soon.
